HIM-2511 Healthcare Quality Improvement and Data Analysis


Credits 3
A study of the basic knowledge of the principles of quality assessment and improvement. Study provides a basis for developing skills in collecting and analyzing data. Topics include health care evaluation systems as well as the role of medical record professionals in quality assessment and improvement, clinical critical pathways and case management, utilization management, and risk. Students will also be introduced to a study of database theory, analysis, and design.
Prerequisite(s): HIM-1600  with grade of C or higher.
Corequisite(s): HIM-2600 , HIM-2520 , and HIM-2560  concurrent.

Course Outcomes
  1. Compute healthcare statistics utilizing a variety of formulas.
  2. Analyze statistical data to reflect patient care and utilization of services.
  3. Identify the mechanisms for evaluating the effectiveness of a Quality Performance Improvement.
  4. Select QI/PI tools and techniques that can be used to identify root causes.
  5. Apply severity-of-illness/intensity-of-service screening criteria.
  6. Identify the key elements in a risk management plan.
  7. Identify the secondary data sources in the healthcare industry.
