PAR-2590 Family Law

A study of family law, including prenuptial agreements, marriage and divorce, spousal support and alimony, child support, custody and visitation. Also includes adoption, child dependency, termination of parental rights, and immigration.
Prerequisite(s): Reading proficiency
Course Outcomes
 

  1. Compare and contrast the legal rights and duties of married and unmarried couples.
  2. Explain the grounds for annulment and divorce and the defenses to those actions.
  3. Analyze the laws governing the equitable distribution of marital property, child custody, and spousal and child support obligations.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of laws and procedures governing alternative family structures, domestic violence, gender roles in support and custody, adoption, surrogacy and other alternative reproductive techniques.
