SGT-2050 Surgical Procedures II

SGT-2050 is the intermediate level of the Surgical Procedure series of classes within the Surgical Technology Program at Prince George’s Community College. This course focuses on advanced surgical procedures such as obstetrics and gynecological procedures, ophthalmic, otorhinolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive, and oral maxillofacial. This course may include other specialties as deemed necessary by the instructor. In addition to new concepts in surgical intervention, more complicated types of instrumentation are introduced. Students will continue to learn to anticipate surgeon’s needs through the process of association and the identification of applied surgical patterns. 
Prerequisite(s): SGT-2010  completion with grade of C or higher.
Corequisite(s): SGT-2100  concurrent and BIO-2010  completed or concurrent.
2 lecture/3 lab hours.

Course Outcomes
  1. Compare and contrast the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system and instrumentation, special equipment, supplies, and drugs used in surgical procedures.
  2. Compare and contrast the anatomy of the ophthalmic region and related instrumentation, special equipment, supplies, and drugs used in surgical procedures. 
  3. Compare and contrast the anatomy of the ear, nose, and areodigestive tract and related instrumentation, special equipment, supplies, and drugs.
  4. Compare and contrast the anatomy relevant to specific procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery instrumentation, special equipment, supplies, and drugs used in surgical procedures.
  5. Distinguish the relevant anatomy and physiology of the skin and its underlying tissues.  
  6. Classify preoperative diagnostic tests and procedures indicated of various procedures.
  7.  Compare and contrast the postoperative care and possible complications of surgical procedures indicated.  
  8. Summarize the pathology that prompts surgical intervention of surgical procedures and the surgical steps for various procedures. 
  9. Set up for advanced surgical procedures with appropriate supplies using aseptic and sterility practices preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative.
