Students must register for classes every semester they wish to attend. Registration involves selecting courses each semester that meet the student’s academic needs, are within their educational plan, and are offered in a manner consistent with each student’s time and place requirements.
Some courses require students to have a certain level of prior knowledge or proficiency to succeed. These requirements are known as prerequisites. While many introductory courses have no prerequisites, others may require completion of specific courses beforehand. In such cases, the course description will indicate the necessary prerequisites.
Some courses require a student to take one course at the same time as another course because the course material is complementary. These are known as course corequisites. All course corequisites will be referenced in the applicable course descriptions.
Basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics are assessed using placement tests, which are required of all new college students. Students who do not achieve satisfactory placement test scores will be required to complete a math and/or English corequisite support course when they take their college-level math and/or English courses.
All new students and those who transfer in fewer than 12 credits are required to complete PAS-1000 Planning for Academic Success: First Year Experience (1 credit). For more information about PAS-1000 see Course Descriptions .
Course Sequencing
Get started on the Right Path at PGCC! In your first semester, we highly recommend that you take math, English and Planning for Academic Success (PAS) within your first 12 credits. Your early success in these courses will put you on the path to success at Prince George’s Community College.
Registration Steps
Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are encouraged to register early in order to take advantage of increased availability of their first-choice classes at their preferred time. The College is committed to using every available class meeting to further the learning experience. Students are therefore required to be registered for classes prior to their start and expected to be present on the first meeting day. Students may not register for courses once they have begun. Consult each semester’s schedule of classes for registration information and special instructions for enrollment in classes that begin later in the semester. Registration involves the following steps:
- Meet with an advisor as needed or required by the college. All degree-seeking students must develop and periodically update an educational plan with the assistance of an academic advisor. Students may also determine courses they need to take by accessing Owl Link or Navigate from the Student Portal, myPGCC.
- Review the schedule of classes that lists all offerings for a particular semester prior to the opening of registration. The schedule is available online before registration begins. Note that accelerated classes with various start dates are available.
- Select classes consistent with an academic program, prior coursework, the agreed-upon educational plan, and/or placement test scores.
- Register for classes online in Owl Link or Navigate or in person, as described in the next section.
- Pay the tuition bill. Students should refer to the PGCC website for tuition and payment plan information and payment deadlines. Registration may not be considered final until the bill has been paid.
Registration Policy
Students must register for courses prior to the start of the course. Students who fail to meet the registration deadline may still enroll in accelerated course sections that start later in the semester. Students may search for accelerated courses using Owl Link or Navigate.
While the College reserves the right to de-register students for non-payment, it is crucial to follow up on all expected payment sources and ensure the funds have been applied to your account to secure your course selections. This includes student financial aid, outside scholarships, payment plans, and third-party payments. Please note that payment is due upon registration unless otherwise noted.
If you register for classes, you are responsible for all charges.
Failure to pay, failure to officially drop by the refund deadline, or failure to attend will not relieve you of the responsibility for these charges. Non-attendance or failure to pay does not constitute an official withdrawal.
In order to avoid financial responsibility, you must officially drop your classes by the refund deadline if you decide not to attend. Do not assume you will be automatically dropped.
Different Ways to Register for Courses
All students are highly encouraged to make an appointment with their advisor prior to registering each semester. Students may register each semester in any one of the following ways:
- Online using Owl Link or Navigate, the college’s registration and planning systems. Online registration is the speediest registration option. Students are encouraged to attempt to register online before seeking in-person support.
- In person at the main campus in Largo at the Office of Records and Registration, Bladen Hall, Room 126
- In person at the Laurel College Center in Laurel, Prince George’s Community College and University Town Center in Hyattsville.
Prince George’s Community College is a cooperating member of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The Consortium’s cross-registration arrangement permits students enrolled in eligible degree programs at one member institution to take a course at another member institution.
PGCC students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible to register for a course in the Consortium:
- Need to be enrolled in a credit degree-seeking program
- Has already completed one semester as a PGCC credit student
- Good academic standing (2.0 or higher cumulative GPA)
- No disciplinary or debt holds
- Has not already completed two Consortium courses per degree (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts in Teaching)
Additionally, courses taken through Consortium must meet the following requirements:
- Course cannot be an independent study, tutorial, internship, capstone or other experiential learning
- Course must count towards student’s program of study
- If a requested course is offered at PGCC during that term the student must provide a written justification for taking course through Consortium instead of at PGCC
- Student meets the prerequisite of the requested course
PGCC students interested in registering for a course through the Consortium should complete the Consortium Registration form. If the class starts within 4 weeks of PGCC’s semester start date – request must be submitted two weeks before PGCC semester start date. If the class starts 3 weeks or more after the PGCC semester start date – request must be submitted by the PGCC semester start date.
Contact the Office of Records and Registration at pgccconsortium@pgcc.edu for more information.
Navigate
Navigate is an online and mobile advisement tool that connects students to many PGCC resources and allows students to schedule appointments and correspond with their advisor. Students may also use Navigate to plan and register for classes. New students are assigned a Navigate account within 24 hours of their acceptance to the College. Students can download the Navigate App by searching “Navigate Student” in their app store.
Owl Link
Owl Link is the online student system at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC). It empowers students to access important online services, such as planning and registering for classes in the Student Planning tool and viewing grades and degree audit using the My Progress tool. Students can also pay for classes and view semester bills, view the status of their financial aid, print unofficial transcripts and class schedules, submit address, phone number, and personal email address changes, review their transfer credit evaluation, generate an enrollment verification, and request official transcripts to be sent to other colleges in Owl Link. To access Owl Link, students at PGCC must have a current, working email address on file. Current credit students who need assistance with their user ID and password should contact the Technology Service Desk in Bladen Hall, Room 110 on the Largo campus or by emailing helpdesk@pgcc.edu.
