ACC-2230 Individual Income Tax Preparation (VITA)

A course that shows the student how the IRS sytem of tax forms operates in the U.S., and how to complete and file the forms. for a client.
(Not offered summer.)

Course Outcomes
 

  1. Recognize the purpose, structure and administration of the Volunteer Income Assistance (VITA) Program and the benefits of providing volunteer service to a diverse clientele.
  2. Determine the proper Federal and state tax forms to be used by the individual taxpayer.
  3. Apply the basic rules and requirements for reportable income, exclusions, allowable deductions and the utilization of available tax credits.
  4. Demonstrate an increased awareness of the importance of maintaining a professional and ethical environment at all times, while assisting a client.
  5. Demonstrate professional interviewing skills to efficiently and effectively obtain the required information for preparation of complete and accurate tax returns.
  6. Apply the steps and procedures involved in the actual preparation (both manual and electronic) of tax returns and the necessary follow-up activities to include recordkeeping
  7. Research tax questions within the scope of the VITA program, utilizing available resources.
  8. Apply appropriate quality review procedures to ensure both accuracy and completeness of tax return preparation.
  9. Complete the VITA proficiency examination at the end of the classroom training period in order to gain required certification to participate in the preparation of tax returns applicable to the VITA program.
