ARB-1010 Elementary Arabic Credits 3 ARB 1010 is a course designed for students who are able to read and write the Arabic alphabet but have little knowledge of Arabic grammar and beginning to intermediate-low speaking skills. It focuses on the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will learn Modern Standard Arabic, which is the language used for reading and writing Arabic today. Students will learn grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, and writing of the Arabic alphabet. Some conversational Arabic and cultural topics will be included. Prerequisite(s): ARB-1000 or permission of the instructor. 3 class/1 lab hour or equivalent. Course Outcomes
- Listen to authentic listening passages in Arabic for comprehension at the elementary level.
- Initiate simple statements by using elementary vocabulary and sentence patterns in Arabic.
- Utilize elementary vocabulary and sentence patterns in Arabic to reply to simple statements.
- Read simple sentences in elementary Arabic for comprehension.
- Utilize fundamentals of Arabic grammar at the elementary level.
- Apply elementary knowledge of Arabic to write simple sentences using harakat, the Arabic voweling system.
- Recall new elementary vocabulary in Arabic for spoken and written communication.
- Identify the characteristics of the various Arabic cultures.
