EGL-1320 Composition II: Writing for Business


Credits 3
Preparation of business documents, including letters, memoranda, email, short reports, research reports, graphics, and job search portfolio. Focus on audience analysis to choose appropriate voice, style, content, and structure for effective written, oral, and visual communication in business and professions. A continuation and extension of the rhetorical principles and composition skills addressed in EGL-1010 .
Prerequisite(s): EGL-1010  with grade of C or higher.
Course Outcomes
  1. Write typical business documents, through planning, drafting, and revising, in cogent, standard English and a clear, concise business style appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and writer’s role.
  2. Conduct primary and secondary research appropriate for business messages.
  3. Integrate primary and secondary research in various modes of business communication, using appropriate citation methods.
  4. Integrate headings, visuals, and other graphics into various modes of business communication.
  5. Create business documents and presentations that address cross-cultural, ethical, and legal issues in business messages.
  6. Deliver effective business presentations with appropriate graphics.
  7. Work collaboratively with classmates on business documents and presentations.
