HST-2230 History of Latin America and the Caribbean

The course is a survey of Latin America and the Caribbean from independence to the present with an overview of the colonial period. It examines the creation and development of the independent nations that evolved from European colonies on the mainland and the Caribbean – Spanish, Portuguese, British, French, Dutch, and Danish – into distinct polities.
Course Outcomes
  1. Identify the significant contributions of Africa and Europe to the history and culture of Latin America and the Caribbean.
  2. Analyze the influence of indigenous and colonial experiences on the social, political, and economic developments of the region.
  3. Describe the societies and cultures of Latin America.
  4. Analyze the past and present roles of gender, race, religion, and class in Latin American societies.
  5. Analyze the revolutions in Haiti, Cuba, Mexico, and Nicaragua, and their impact on social and political regional and world events.
