RST-2530 Clinical Practice in Critical Care I


Credits 4
This course will provide supervised clinical application of the principles and procedures of continuous mechanical ventilation in the critical care setting. Directed practice will include assessment, evaluation, analysis, and decision-making skills related to monitoring and management of the critically-ill patient.
Prerequisite(s): RST-1730  completion with grade of C or higher.
Corequisite(s): RST-2500  and RST-2490  concurrent with grade of C or higher.
16 clinical hours.

Course Outcomes
  1. Perform bedside assessment of the respiratory system in the critical care setting with assistance from the clinical instructor.
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of therapy with assistance from the clinical instructor.
  3. Develop a respiratory care plan with assistance from the clinical instructor.
  4. Perform respiratory therapy procedures utilized in the critical care setting with assistance from the clinical instructor.
  5. Set up non-invasive and invasive ventilation systems on critical care patients with assistance from the clinical instructor.
  6. Propose a plan to correct oxygenation and ventilation abnormalities with assistance from the clinical instructor.
  7. Differentiate between pressure and flow time scalars.
  8. Detect ventilator asynchrony.
  9. Demonstrate professional affective skills (organization, communication, time management, accurate documentation) in the critical care clinical setting.
