TED-2510 Classroom Strategies for English Language Learners


Credits 3
This course focuses on meeting the needs of English Language Learners in a classroom (Pre-K - grade 12). Students will learn about culturally responsive instruction and how to create a classroom climate that affirms linguistic and cultural diversity. Additionally, students will learn how to use a variety of teaching strategies to enhance both second language acquisition and learning of content knowledge and skills. Activities and assessments will focus on the grade level(s) students teach or plan on teaching.
Prerequisite(s): Reading proficiency. TED-1100 , TED-1200 , TED-1300 , and TED-1400 

Rule: ECE AAS students must also take TED-1110  prior to taking 2000 level courses. For students seeking certification, or recertification, departmental permission/granted petition is required.
Course Outcomes

  1. Explain the challenges English Language Learners face in a monolingual classroom.
  2. Discuss the importance of being responsive to linguistic and cultural differences in the classroom.
  3. Apply teaching and classroom management strategies to address the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of students.
  4. Modify learning activities and lesson plans to meet the needs of English Language Learners.
  5. Modify various types of classroom assessments to meet the needs of English Language Learners.
  6. Express pedagogical strategies which aid in second language acquisition.
  7. Plan for a classroom climate that affirms linguistic and cultural diversity.
