TED-2520 Using New Literacies in the Classroom

This course is an in-depth exploration of new forms of literacy made possible by digital technology developments. Students will explore how new literacies, such as wikis, blogs, and internet projects can be used to enhance learning in the classroom. Students will learn both how to effectively use existing sources and create sources for learning in their classroom. Additionally, students will explore how these new literacies build upon traditional reading and writing experiences and why new literacy skills are necessary in the 21st century.
Prerequisite(s): Reading proficiency.  TED-1100 , TED-1200 , TED-1300 , TED-1400 , and INT-1010  or higher. 

Rule: ECE A.A.S.  students must also take TED-1110  prior to taking 2000 level courses. For students seeking certification, or recertification, departmental permission/granted petition is required.
Course Outcomes

  1. Compare and contrast traditional reading and writing skills with new literacy skills.
  2. Articulate a rationale for using new literacies in classrooms.
  3. Explain how new literacies can be used to enhance the curriculum.
  4. Discuss how learning how to adapt to continuously changing technologies is more critical than knowing any particular ICT.
  5. Distinguish effective uses of new literacies from ineffective ones.
  6. Integrate strategies for new literacies in lessons and units.
  7. Evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of existing sources of new literacies.
  8. Create new literacy sources for learning in the classroom.
