THE-1040 Introduction to Event Staging


Credits 4
THE 1040 provides an introduction to the essential techniques required of a stage carpenter, emphasizing familiarity with the stage space and its equipment, routine of loading a show into the theatre, and running a show. Explorationsin the basic skills within this specialized area of Theatre and Entertainment Technology are undertaken to begin establishing a professional canon. Students enrolled in this course are expected to be at a novice level of competency. This course consists of a lecture component (2 hour each week) and a laboratory session (4 hours each week). Students enrolled in this course are required to attend the live theatre performance(s) listed in the syllabus outside of scheduled class time. This experience is vital to understanding and learning about the performing arts and is tied directly to significant assignments in this class.Students enrolled in this course will be required to participate in a culminating performance to demonstrate proficiency in the course outcomes. Therefore, students will be required to attend production hours outside of scheduled class time during the final exam period to attend a technical rehearsal, final dress rehearsal, and performance. The specific requirements and details regarding the live theatre performance(s) and culminating performance are outlined in the syllabus. Students should pay special attention to these requirements.
Prerequisite(s): Reading proficiency levels
2 class/4 lab hours.
Note: If revisions are accepted it is of paramount importance all catalog, promotional materials, and program maps/pathways materials reflect these updates, in particular, the new category and prefixes for the current Theatre and Entertainment Technology Certificate (program and courses) needs to occur to ensure consistency and assist the Humanities Department in its move away from the category of “Theatre” and the prefix “THE”.

  1. Perform backstage fire and personal safety procedures.
  2. Operate backstage tools and equipment.
  3. Identify standard backstage operating procedures.
  4. Apply ergonomics of pushing, pulling and lifting stage equipment.
  5. Perform teamwork as it applies to loading, staging and grips.
  6. Identify the architecture of local venues.
  7. Respond to cue sheets during performance
  8. Perform operations as directed by stage management.
  9. Run scenery, props and draperies
