NUM-2110 Clinical Nuclear Medicine I


Credits 4
This course is a directed, competency-based experience in an affiliated hospital. Clinical experience courses provide the opportunity for students to observe, practice, and perform routine diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures. Licensed and certified technologists provide critiques, guidance, and mentorship to the students. On-site lectures by board-certified physicians supplement the clinical experience. This is the first course in a sequence of five clinical education courses. 
Prerequisite(s): NUM-1450 , NUM-1460 , NUM-2100 , NUM-2650  - all with grade of C or higher.
Corequisite(s): NUM-1450 , NUM-1460 , NUM-2100 , NUM-2650  - all with grade of C or higher.
Course Outcomes
  1. Position patients for all views of an assigned procedure.
  2. Prepare images for radiologist review according to department policy.
  3. Verify the patient’s identification.
  4. Calculate patient doses based on half-life and activity.
  5. Draw up patient doses, using aseptic technique.
  6. Administer radiopharmaceutical doses according to department policy.
  7. Correctly dispose of radiopharmaceuticals and syringes.
  8. Assist with routine quality control procedures on imaging and non-imaging equipment.
  9. Assist with routine cleaning of patient care areas and hot lab.
  10. Assume responsibility for personal safety and hygiene.
  11. Demonstrate professional behavior and concern for the patient.
  12. Comply with emergency procedures utilized by the clinical affiliate.
