CHM-2020 Organic Chemistry II Credits 3 Continuation of CHM-2010 with emphasis on reaction mechanisms, and synthesis of organic compounds. Prerequisite(s): CHM-2010. Course Outcomes
- Correlate functional groups and other structural features with the chemical and physical properties of organic compounds.
- Predict mechanisms and products of reactions.
- Design reaction schemes.
- Characterize reactants/intermediates as nucleophiles, bases, electrophiles, aromatic/antiaromatic/nonaromatic, or according to inductive effects, resonance effects, charge concentration/polarization, stability/instability, hyperconjugation, and other important attributes.
- Identify major name reactions and reaction types, such as Diels Alder, EAS, nucleophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution, condensation, reduction, oxidation, substitution, elimination, organic acid base, and addition.
- Analyze the regiochemical, stereochemical, conformational, and other energetics associated with substrate and reagent features in organic reactions (by computational and other methodologies).
- Apply the IUPAC system of nomenclature to organic compounds.
