COR-2510 Probation, Parole, and Community-Based Corrections Credits 3 A study of the philosophy and functioning of community-based corrections organizations, specifically probation and parole. Emphasis is placed on the historical development of community-based practices, analysis of potential alternatives to current parole and probation procedures, including restorative justice measures, and discussion of important issues and problems currently facing community-based corrections. Prerequisite(s): Reading readiness. Course Outcomes
- Describe the historical concepts and current practices of probation, parole and community-based correction in America.
- Analyze the philosophy of the correctional system.
- Discuss the duties and roles of probation and parole officers.
- Evaluate such contemporary correctional issues as prisoners’ rights, overcrowding, prison buildings, early release programs, the cost of corrections, the privatization of correction systems, and the changing emphasis in correctional theory.
