EGR-2220 Solid Mechanics Credits 3 Topics in deformable bodies in axial, torsional, bending, and combined loading. This course extends the introductory strength of materials to intermediate continuum mechanics. Other topics include statically indeterminate and temperature effect analysis; beam, column, and pressure vessel configurations. More advanced topics include structural stability, analysis of one- and two-dimensional structures, inelastic material behavior, and energy methods. Prerequisite(s): EGR-2200. Course Outcomes
- Calculate normal stress, shear stress, ultimate load, factor of safety, and axial deformations, including indeterminate forms.
- Analyze systems involving shearing strain, the modulus of rigidity, angular deflection, lateral strain using Poisson’s Ratio Torsions, shearing stress in circular shaft, angle of twist in shafts, gear systems, objects with regular geometries, and indeterminate forms.
- Analyze systems involving pure bending, neutral axis, radius of curvature, finding maximum stress, objects made of several materials including materials layered concentrically, transverse loading shears in the horizontal plane, and stresses due to combined loadings.
- Analyze systems involving transformations of stress and strain, construction of the Mohr Circle, principle planes, principle stresses, max shearing stresses using the Mohr Circle.
