ESL-0106 English as a Second Language: Advanced Reading

Credits 3
Equivalent Hours 4

ESL 0106 is the third and final reading course in the English as a Second Language reading/writing series.  Successful completion of ESL 0106 fulfills the College’s reading readiness prerequisite. ESL 0106 is the most advanced reading course in the series designed to develop non-native English speakers’ critical reading skills in advanced texts. In this course, students further develop reading skills by identifying main ideas in advanced academic reading passages.  Additionally, students use context and text markers to make inferences in order to define unfamiliar words and determine author’s purpose and tone of advanced reading passages.  Students learn to articulate inferences and use target vocabulary through restatements, summaries, and other reading responses passages.  Students also practice skimming and scanning text for information.  A second focus in this course is reading and non-prose texts such as photographs, charts, and graphs.
