FOS-2570 Firearms and Tool Marks Identification

A study of forensic firearms and tool marks identification. Emphasis is on the examination techniques and procedures for identifying firearms, tool marks, ammunition, projectiles and projectile fragments. Includes firearms nomenclature, determining muzzle-to-target distance, gunshot residue tests, comparative micrography, serial number restoration, and the collecting, handling, and presenting of firearms and tool mark evidence.
Prerequisite(s): FOS-2500
Course Outcomes
 

  1. Discuss the history and different types of firearms and ammunition.
  2. Evaluate the theories and principles of the firearms identification process.
  3. Explain distance determination and gunshot residue examination.
  4. Analyze legal issues related to firearms and tool marks identification, and the preparation and procedures for testifying in court as an expert witness.
