HRT-1160 Woody Ornamental Plants I

Identification, landscape use, and maintenance of trees, shrubs, vines, and ground covers commonly found in the mid-Atlantic region. Focus is on evergreens and spring flowering trees.
2 class/2 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Identify evergreen and spring flowering trees, shrubs, and vines commonly used in the nursery and landscaping industry in Zones 6 and 7.
  2. Compare the installation, cultural, and maintenance requirements of a wide variety of evergreen and spring flowering landscape plant materials.
  3. Categorize how plants function within a system, both aesthetically and ecologically.
  4. Compare the diversity of form, color, texture, and mature size of evergreen and spring flowering trees.
  5. Identify appropriate plant materials for specific landscape settings.
  6. Describe the common plant disorders, both biotic and abiotic, of each plant covered.
