HRT-1200 Plant Diseases and Pests Credits 3 The major diseases and insects that attack ornamental plants are studied in this course. The fundamentals of diagnosis and identification, control procedures, and pesticide regulations are addressed. 2 class/2 lab hours. Course Outcomes
- Explain basic entomology concepts, including insect development, insect behavior, and insect nomenclature and classification.
- Analyze damage to plants, including identification of which insects could be involved.
- Differentiate the variety of methods of controlling insect pests of plants, including integrated pest management strategies.
- Describe the basic concepts of plant pathology, including abiotic plant disorders, biotic plant diseases, disease development, and plant disease nomenclature and classification.
- Identify major plant diseases.
- Describe methods of controlling plant diseases.
- Pass the standard private pesticide applicator’s certification exam, administered by the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
- Diagnose plant problems through proper sample collection, careful symptom and sign observation, and proper questioning of appropriate clientele.
