INT-2530 Introduction to Telecommunications

This is an introduction to Telecommunications. Topics to include operation of the US telecommunications system, including the local loop, cellular system, and the SS7 long distance system. Students will also learn about Voice over IP, coding, compression, error-checking, and security systems.
Prerequisite(s): INT-1010

Course Outcomes
  1. Determine bandwidth in bits/sec for a given link.
  2. Identify the working of the telephone system’s local loop, central office, and trunk lines.     
  3. Decode ASCII code, Unicode, and other encoding systems correctly.
  4. Identify operational protocols used in the US cellular telephone system.     
  5. Compare and Contract compression algorithms.
  6. Identify Voice over Internet Protocols (VoIP) and  equipment.     
  7. Identify appropriate methods of encryption, authentication, and confidentiality for secure data communication.
  8. Evaluate telecommunications systems
