MUS-1110 Jazz Ensemble Credits 1 The Jazz Ensemble consists of multiple instrumentalists in various sections performing music in the jazz idiom. Students explore various forms and styles of jazz through rehearsal and performance in the large instrumental ensemble format. Emphasis is placed on playing techniques suitable for a jazz ensemble member, including intonation, diction, phrasing, musicality, balance, blend, sound production, and stylistically appropriate period practice. Initial rehearsals focus on part learning, while subsequent rehearsals address instrumental techniques. Students perform a concert at the end of the semester. Prerequisite(s): Required for instrumental music majors. Must be taken 3 times over 3 separate semesters. Departmental permission required 3 lab hours. Course Outcomes
- Demonstrate basic instrumental playing techniques suitable for a jazz ensemble member.
- Demonstrate proficiency in performing different styles of jazz ensemble music.
- Demonstrate musical emotion through performance, in the appropriate style that is found in the ensemble literature.
