NUR-1000 Introduction to Nursing - PN

This is an introductory course to the Nursing (LPN) Certificate program. The course focuses on preparing the student for the rigorous study required for clinical nursing courses. Students can expect to build on content from prerequisite courses to prepare for nursing courses. The course content includes microbiology concepts related to nursing practice, mathematical concepts required for safe dose calculations, communication, ethical and legal concepts, and social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues that influence the nursing profession. Additional concepts are critical thinking, test-taking, and time management skills. Upon satisfactory completion of this course and required prerequisites, the student is eligible for admission into the practical nursing certificate program based on a ranked rubric score.

Course Outcomes

Identify the roles of the licensed practical nurse including client safety, legal and ethical issues.
Discuss the historical growth of the nursing profession.
Recognize social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues and their impact on the nursing profession.
Demonstrate strategies for success in nursing including goal setting, critical thinking, study skills, and learning styles.
Utilize mathematical concepts pertaining to ratio, proportion, and dimensional analysis, while incorporating medical terminology.
Define key medical terminology for use in future professional activities, such as documentation of care and communication between health care providers.
Apply microbiology concepts pertinent to the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) practice.
