TED-2801 Instruction of Reading

Focuses on the teaching of reading from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.  Students will develop and use a variety of developmentally appropriate word recognition and reading comprehension strategies. Students will also examine a balanced literacy program which fosters phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. This course is intended for those persons who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking initial teacher certification and for teachers seeking recertification.
Prerequisite(s): Departmental permission required.

Course Outcomes

  1. Explain how reading is a constructive process, recognizing the interaction of word comprehension, and the reader’s response.
  2. Know, explain, and incorporate into planning a variety of appropriate strategies to teach all aspects of word recognition;  reading fluency; comprehension and vocabulary. 
  3. Plan classroom environments that support a balanced literacy program.
  4. Devise home-school connections to foster increased learning for students.
  5. Plan differentiated lessons using materials and strategies to meet a variety of student needs.
