TRF-2040 Introduction to Broadcast News

In this course students examine broadcast news for radio and television from a theoretical, philosophical and practical perspective. Students analyze and evaluate both the content and the delivery of news. In addition, students learn how to report news themselves from beginning to end. They study electronic news gathering and develop techniques for interviewing. Additionally, they write broadcast news, with a focus on story developing, reporting, and editing. Lastly, they examine ethical standards in journalism related to broadcast news.
2 class/2 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
 

  1. Identify various theoretical, philosophical, and practical approaches to broadcast news writing.
  2. Write news stories about various cultures, local, national and global issues for radio and television.
  3. Develop broadcast news delivery techniques for radio and television.
  4. Analyze news articles and broadcast news stories as both gatherers and consumers.
  5. Evaluate broadcast news delivery.
  6. Produce broadcast news segments for major student news production
  7. Apply ethical standards in journalism.
