MAT-0113C Principles for Mathematical Ideas Credits 0 Equivalent Hours 2 Principles for Mathematical Ideas is a quantitative literacy-based corequisite course designed to provide the skills and conceptual understanding to succeed in the accompanying linked college-level MAT-1130 Mathematical Ideas course. Students will learn the prerequisite materials and get support for the corresponding linked credit level course MAT-1130. Essential skills include concepts of Venn Diagrams, introduction to terminology involving logic, interest, basic probability, numeration, set and voting theory.
Principles for Mathematical Ideas does not satisfy General Education Mathematics requirement. Prerequisite(s): DLS-0061 completed with grade of A/B (first attempt), or MAT-0071 completed with grade of D, or Math readiness, and Reading readiness. Course Outcomes
- Apply concepts of Venn Diagrams to organize information to see the relationships (similarities and differences between two or more sets of items.
- Define terminology associated with logic and truth tables such as negation, conjunction, disjunction, conditional, bi-conditional, contradiction, and tautology.
- Identify terminology and formulas associated with personal finance such as principal (present value), future value, interest rate, simple interest, compound interest, and amortization.
- Define between empirical, theoretical, and subjective probabilities; explain and calculate basic probabilities (and, or, conditional)
- Interpret different numeration systems (ie. binary system, other bases)
- Illustrate examples associated with voting theory. (Plurality, Borda, Pair-wise Comparison, Electoral College)
