MUS-2000 Music Business & Entrepreneurship

This course gives students an overview of the music industry, the role of producers, agents, unions, and managers, which are essential for a sound business plan. Students explore career opportunities in the music industry and develop a variety of strategies to assist them in gaining employment in the music and related industries. Additionally, students are exposed to the workings of record companies and streaming services with their uses and functions of copyright and trademark. Students also learn to use social media tools to enhance and promote their brand.
Course Outcomes
1. Explain basic music industry principles of songwriting to include copyright, publishing, and performance rights.

2.Explain the business of live performance to include artist management, unions and guilds, entertainment agencies, and venues.
3. Identify the record industry systems used by record producers, recording studios, manufacturing production, and distribution companies.

4. Explain the use of contracts and licenses in the music industry.

5. Discuss the role of social media in the development of a career or personal/professional brand.

6. Explore career opportunities in the music industry.

7. Apply employment strategies for specific positions in the music industry or related fields.
