MUS-1005 Fundamentals of Music Theory Credits 3 This course introduces students to the basic elements of music and is intended for students who lack a strong background in the fundamentals of musical elements and notation. Students learn note identification, staff notation, basics of rhythm and meter, major and minor key signatures, scale construction, triads and seventh chords, basic keyboard skills, and basic harmonic function. Students learn to read and write Western music notation and develop aural skills such as ear training and sight singing.
*Students in the General Studies A.A. with a Concentration in Music must consult with the music area coordinator prior to enrolling in this course* Course Outcomes
- Describe the construction of a song in western music using proper terminology of music theory.
- Identify the principles of notation, including meter, key signature, and texture, by analyzing a musical score.
- Construct major and minor scales, intervals, and triads using music notation.
- Identify intervals, scales, triads, and rhythmic patterns from recorded audio or live performances.
- Sing intervals, scales, and simple phrases from music notation.
- Play scales, intervals, triads, and simple phrases on the keyboard.
- Construct triads and 7th chords in all inversions.
- Critique laws and ethical practices designed to protect artists copyright for written and recorded music.
