BIO-1130 Principles of Biology: Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior

This course is an introduction to ecology, evolution, and behavioral biology. Students explore various aspects of evolutionary theory as it pertains to the origin of life, natural selection, population dynamics, as well as contemporary issues. Students distinguish the key components and levels of ecosystems to assess human impacts on biodiversity and climate. The laboratory portion focuses on analysis of Mendelian genetics, phylogenetic relationships, and scientific communication.

Students may not receive credit for both BIO1010 and BIO1130.

Prerequisite(s): MAT-1350 (for STEM majors), or MAT-1250 , or MAT-1140 , with grade of C or higher; EGL-1010 completed or concurrent.
3 class/3 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
1. Apply the scientific method, including appropriate statistical analysis, in writing a laboratory report.

2. Explain the processes and mechanisms involved in evolution, including how they pertain to changes in populations.

3. Apply evolutionary processes to population and community ecology, with a focus on population dynamics and interspecific interactions.

4. Describe how population genetics and genomics are integrated in phylogenetic analysis.

5. Identify biotic and abiotic factors that affect ecosystem-level dynamics, with an emphasis on the principles of conservation biology.
