BIO-1140 Principles of Biology: Cellular and Molecular Biology

Credits 4
This course is one of a two-course sequence for students majoring in science, health, and related disciplines. This course addresses the cellular and biochemical aspects in organisms, including cell anatomy and physiology, structure and function of macromolecules, energy processing, and the molecular biology of gene expression. Students may receive credit for only one of the following: BIO-1140 or BIO-1010 toward the same degree.

Prerequisite(s): CHM-1010.
3 class/3 lab hours.
Course Outcomes

  1. Use the scientific method, including hypothesis development, testing, and appropriate statistical analysis, to interpret information and draw conclusions.
  2. Identify the major types of organic compounds and the main roles played by each type.
  3. Explain cellular functions, including membrane physiology and cellular metabolism.
  4. Describe the Central Dogma and how basic molecular genetics is applied in biotechnology.
  5. Write a scientific laboratory report while adhering to the ethical standards that apply to scientific investigation.
