BIO-2300 Introduction to Environmental Health

An introduction to how humans affect and are affected by the quality of water, air, soil, and food resources. Provides an overview of pollution issues that impact human health; emphasizes types and sources of pollutants and their consequences with respect to human health. Also explores the impact of the growing human population on environmental quality and on health issues.
Prerequisite(s): BIO-1130 , BIO-1140 , and MAT-0104 , all with grade of C or higher.
Course Outcomes

Describe fundamental principles of toxicology, epidemiology, and risk assessment.
Identify types and sources of various harmful environmental agents.
Analyze how and where these agents interact with the environment and impact human health. Identify and employ the basic principles of environmental risk assessment.
Evaluate the effectiveness of laws and regulations in minimizing risks.
Formulate strategies to address gaps in our current knowledge of environmental health hazards and areas of uncertainty in risk assessment.
