BIO-2330 Fundamentals of Soil Science

Credits 4
A lecture/laboratory course introducing the study and management of soils as ecosystem components and media for the growth of plants and other organisms. Includes soil morphology, composition, formation, and conservation; emphasizes the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils as they relate to plant biology, nutrient cycles, the hydrologic cycle, engineering uses of soils, and environmental quality issues.
Prerequisite(s): BIO-1130 , BIO-1140 , CHM-1010 , and MAT-0104 with grade C or higher.
3 lecture/3 lab hours per week.
Course Outcomes
  1. Describe the basic processes of soil formation.
  2. Classify different types of soils.
  3. Describe biological, chemical, and physical properties of soils.
  4. Evaluate functions of soils based on their biological, chemical, and physical properties.
  5. Analyze water and nutrient cycles in soils.
  6. Apply principles of soil science to problems in agriculture, land management, pollution, and conservation.
