TRF-2340 Digital Video Editing

An introduction to the theory and practice of post-production techniques and aesthetics, while exploring key terms, functions, and concepts of non-linear editing. Students will learn the equipment and processes used to manipulate video and audio using professional nonlinear editing software. Topics also include general practices and organizing techniques, rough cuts, continuity, edit types, transitions, trimming, applying effects, filters, sound editing, titles, the fine cut, and exporting the final project.
Prerequisite(s): TRF-1330 or permission of department.
2 class/3 lab hours.
Course Outcomes

Apply skills in all phases of non-linear editing using industry-standard editing equipment and software.
Explain common editing terms and vocabulary.
Translate script and/or storyboard to the editing process in order to cultivate personal expression through video storytelling.
Demonstrate digital video capture, import of supporting audio and visual elements, and organization of raw footage.
Edit dialogue and audio content for continuity.
Perform the functions of insert and overwrite edits, edit point trimming, the use of the ripple, roll, slip, slide and extend tools to adjust edit points.
Apply transitions between video and audio elements.
Add narration, sound effects, music, still images, titles, graphics and VFX (visual) effects.
Output completed video to DVD, digital formats (Flash, QuickTime, MP4), or web distribution.
