BLD-2130 NCCER Electrical Level 3

Credits 7
This course provides the third level of training of the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) electrical curriculum, which is designed to comply with the National Electric Code (NEC). Students gain an understanding of lighting system design and commercial electrical service. They acquire the skills and knowledge required to perform load and conductor calculations and to prevent explosions and ignitions in hazardous locations. They learn how to install and perform maintenance tasks for overcurrent protection, distribution equipment, transformers, voice, data and video, and motor controls. Successful completion of the course earns students the NCCER Electrical Level 3 credential. This course is cross-listed with the following Continuing Education courses: ELC 346: Electrical: Level 3, Part 1 AND ELC 347: Electrical: Level 3, Part 2 AND ELC 348: Electrical: Level 3, Part 3.
Prerequisite(s): BLD-2120
Course Outcomes

  1. Calculate branch and feeder circuit loads for residential and commercial applications.
  2. Select conductors for electrical applications based on resistance and voltage calculations, insulation, capacity and temperature ratings.
  3. Design a lighting system with controls for specific lighting situations.
  4. Install electrical equipment and seals in hazardous locations as appropriate to prevent ignitions and explosions.
  5. Demonstrate the selection, installation and testing of circuit breakers and fuses.
  6. Diagram the installation, grounding, testing and maintenance requirements of power distribution systems.
  7. Describe the construction, operation and maintenance of power distribution systems.
  8. Identify the installation considerations for commercial services, such as overhead, underground, switchgear and multi-family services.
  9. Install conductors and controllers used in motor applications.
  10. Install voice, video and data systems using correct terminations and testing systems.
