Information Technology, A.S.

Program Description

The Information Technology A.S. degree enables students to study modern approaches to problem solving within computer system environments. They develop logical reasoning skills while learning to analyze, design, and implement solutions using information processing tools, application packages, and programming languages. The courses in this program cover a wide array of computing disciplines including application software, cybersecurity, data science, networking, operating systems, programming languages, and systems analysis and design. This degree prepares students for transfer to a 4-year institution. In addition to the Information Technology, A.S degree, students may earn one or more embedded certificates through the selection of their elective courses. Students who plan to complete one or more certificates should discuss their elective selections with an advisor, the department chair, or an academic coordinator.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the Information Technology, A.S. will be able to:

1. Apply fundamental information technology concepts to file management and the use of a variety of information technology tools. 
2. Utilize object-oriented methodology to write efficient code.
3. Perform basic network and operating system administration, configuration, and system security tasks.
4. Conceptualize, design, and diagram possible solutions to logical problems, focusing on those problems which are amenable to a computer-based solution.
5. Analyze, design, and develop a computer information system for a real-world scenario.

Transferability

Credit earned at any public institution in the state shall be transferable to any other institution if the:

• Credit is from a college or university parallel course or program;
• Grades in the block of courses transferred average 2.00 or higher; and
• Acceptance of the credit is consistent with the policies of the receiving institution governing students following the  same program. Refer to ARTSYS at artweb.usmd.edu and the receiving institution’s catalog to select transferable courses.
