EGL-0090 Advanced Foundations of College English

This course is designed to prepare students for college-level courses, specifically by improving skills in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and effective written communication. Application of these skills will not only enable students to become more effective and efficient readers of their college textbooks but will also familiarize students with the fundamental principles of written communication. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and analyzing various texts and writing clear and effective paragraphs or essays.
Prerequisite(s): Students are eligible for this course based on a combined Accuplacer test score of 100 - 147.
Students are eligible for this course if they received a grade of D in EGL-0080 
4 class hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Use college-level vocabulary in standard written English in paragraphs and essays.
  2. Use pre-reading, reading, and post-reading strategies to summarize key concepts of college level materials.
  3. Analyze a text for elements of critical reading and thinking (author’s purpose, point of view, tone, facts and opinions, valid/invalid arguments, etc.).
  4. Evaluate stated and inferential information within and across multiple texts of varying lengths.
  5. Using information from source materials, apply MLA style to paraphrase, quote, and create citations.
  6. Use conventions of standard English to compose clear, complete sentences in a variety of patterns and lengths free from major errors (such as fragments and/or run-ons).
  7. Correct significant grammar, usage, mechanics, punctuation, and spelling errors in own writing.
  8. Write original essays that:​
  • incorporate effective rhetorical strategies, based on audience and purpose.
  • contain a clearly stated thesis statement.
  • develop logical and varied supporting evidence.
  • incorporate feedback for revision when appropriate.
