Transfer Opportunities

Many students who attend Prince George’s Community College do so to prepare for transfer to a four-year college or university. After graduating community college students routinely transfer to colleges and universities in Maryland, the Washington metropolitan area, and throughout the United States. From the beginning of their enrollment here at Prince George’s Community College, students need to select a Transfer Pathway (AA, AS, AAT), which are aimed at meeting the needs of students who intend to earn a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. They also should see their assigned advisor periodically to evaluate future plans for course selection and to determine current transfer criteria at the four-year college or university being considered, based on their specific pathway. Those who plan for this goal and seek professional advice, both early and consistently, may ensure maximum success in the transfer process.

After consulting with an advisor, students who intend to transfer to a public college or university within the state of Maryland may use a computerized system known as ARTSYS, developed by the University System of Maryland (USM), to determine which of our courses are best suited for their intended major at the four-year institution (Please note it is always best to consult with the sending institution as well). Students who intend to transfer out of state may still use our curriculum planning guides, available online and from Advising and Transfer Services, to chart the ideal selection of courses; however, again it is encouraged to consult with those out of state institutions to ensure transferability as Maryland Community College courses are designed to map to Maryland colleges and universities.

The Office of Transfer Services, located in Bladen Hall, Room 124, offers more focused, one-on-one assistance with transfer course planning and selection, especially for those who need help determining which college or university would be best in terms of their intended major and their financial requirements. Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment through NAVIGATE to meet with an advisor to discuss these options.

Articulation Agreements

Articulation agreements are formal, written agreements that facilitate the transfer of academic credits from one institution of higher education to another. These agreements are designed to enhance students’ opportunities for transfer and completion of baccalaureate degrees by recognizing prior coursework or learning completed at another institution or entity. At Prince George’s Community College (PGCC), articulation agreements have been established with a wide range of public and private four-year colleges and universities, including those within the Maryland state university system. These agreements are intended to maximize the number of credits that students can transfer from PGCC by outlining the required curricula and policies that support a smooth transition from one institution to another.

In compliance with the regulations set forth by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) under COMAR 13B.07.01, PGCC supports several types of articulation agreements:

  1. Program Transfer Agreement: This type of articulation agreement is between a sending institution (such as PGCC) and a receiving institution (a four-year college or university). It specifies the course and degree requirements within a specific bachelor’s degree program that can be completed at the sending institution before transferring to the receiving institution. This ensures that students are well-prepared and that their credits are fully recognized within the program they wish to complete.
  2.
  3. Prior Learning Transfer Agreement: This type of agreement allows students to receive academic credit at the receiving institution for demonstrated proficiency through prior learning experiences. This could include satisfactory performance on specific assessments, professional certifications, or other relevant learning experiences completed at another postsecondary institution or entity.

By maintaining these agreements, PGCC helps ensure that students can make the most of their prior education and learning experiences, ultimately facilitating their academic and professional success. For more detailed information on these agreements and how they apply, students are encouraged to consult the Maryland Higher Education Commission guidelines and the relevant sections of COMAR (13B.07) available at Maryland Higher Education and COMAR Maryland

Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) & Campus Partnerships

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a formal agreement between institutions that outlines the terms and details of a partnership, ensuring clear communication and mutual understanding. At Prince George’s Community College (PGCC), numerous MOUs are in place with various educational institutions to foster collaboration and support student success. These agreements are crucial as they help ensure a smooth transition for students moving from Maryland K-12 schools to colleges, universities, and other educational entities.

PGCC has established MOUs with several prominent institutions, including Bowie State University, the University of Maryland College Park, the University of Maryland Global Campus, Washington Adventist University, Trinity Washington University, and Morgan State University, among others. These partnerships are designed to enhance the educational journey of PGCC students by providing access to assigned pre-transfer advisors or admissions representatives from each partnered institution.

Through these MOUs, students can schedule appointments with representatives to gain valuable information on transfer application deadlines, transfer admission requirements, majors offered, and institutional support services. This proactive engagement allows students to make informed decisions about their educational paths, ensuring that they meet their academic goals while maximizing the transferability of their credits.

The importance of MOUs extends beyond the mere facilitation of credit transfer. These agreements play a vital role in student success and engagement by providing clear pathways for academic progression, reducing potential barriers to transfer, and offering personalized support to students as they transition to four-year institutions. Additionally, they help foster collaboration between institutions, which can lead to enhanced educational opportunities and resources for all parties involved.

For more detailed information on MOUs and the regulations governing them, students and faculty can refer to the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) guidelines and the relevant sections of the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13B.07. These resources provide comprehensive information on the creation and implementation of MOUs, ensuring that all agreements comply with state educational standards and support student achievement effectively.
