MAS-2050 Clinical Procedures II Credits 4 Presentation of selected lab activities and responsibilities of the medical assistant in areas of hematology, immunology, microbiology, chemistry, urinalysis, preparing body fluids for analysis, point of care testing, and venipuncture. Focus is on the application of quality assurance measures to ensure accurate testing. Emphasis is on the infection cycle and methods of prevention including Standard Precautions, protective personal equipment, OSHA regulations, and Material Safety Data Sheets. Also teaches the role of the medical assistant in maintaining a safe environment in the clinical laboratory as well as disaster preparedness. Prerequisite(s): BIO-2050 , MAS-2020 with grade of C or higher completed or concurrent. 3 lab/3 studio. (Offered spring only.)

- Educate patients regarding preparation for various lab tests.
- Distinguish between the major steps involved in point of care testing (POCT) procedures.
- Identify the procedural steps for obtaining blood specimens for testing.
- Define the rationale for quality control procedures in the laboratory.

- Define guidelines related to maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
- Perform patient assessment using cardiopulmonary testing.
- Relate common pathophysiology to the associated laboratory tests and values.
