RST-2630 Clinical Practice in Critical Care II


Credits 4
This course will provide supervised clinical application of the principles and procedures of continuous mechanical ventilation in the critical care setting. Directed practice will include assessment, evaluation, analysis, and decision-making skills related to monitoring and management of the critically-ill patient.
Prerequisite(s): RST-2490 RST-2500  and RST-2530  with grade of C or higher.
Corequisite(s): RST-2620  concurrent with grade of C or higher.
Capstone Course(s): Students must complete a minimum of 52 credits, including all prerequisite courses, prior to enrolling in this course
16 clinical hours.

Course Outcomes
  1. Perform bedside assessment of the respiratory system in critical care patients.
  2. Communicate with physicians and nurses in bedside patient care rounds.
  3. Develop a treatment plan for respiratory care.
  4. Evaluate effectiveness of respiratory therapy treatment.
  5. Perform respiratory therapy procedures utilized in the critical care setting.
  6. Set up non-invasive and invasive ventilation systems on critical care patients.
  7. Troubleshoot non-invasive and invasive ventilation systems on critical care patients.
  8. Correct oxygenation/ventilation abnormalities with minimal assistance from the clinical instructor at the level of an entry level practitioner.
  9. Analyze flow and pressure time scalars for ventilator asynchrony.
  10. Choose the corrective action for ventilator asynchrony.
  11. Demonstrate professional affective skills (organization, communication, time management, accurate documentation) in the critical care clinical setting.
