MUS-1550 Digital Music Production Techniques


Credits 3
Students utilize both MIDI and digital audio to create an original composition using Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software. Students begin with creating sessions and learn to manage track assignments. Through using proper signal flow/connections they learn how to troubleshoot sound playback issues. Additionally, students learn to use digital audio and MIDI plug-ins to enhance their recorded tracks, and mix and master files for distribution. Finally, students explore file management options.
Prerequisite(s): MUS-1500 , with a C or higher or permission from academic coordinator or chair
Course Outcomes
  1. Describe the steps to establish a new session in a DAW.
  2. Describe the signal flow within a DAW software and with external equipment
  3. Explain the MIDI software and hardware practices and techniques used in a DAW.
  4. Use plug-in effects and plug-in instruments with proper system management in a DAW.
  5. Explain proper hard drive and file storage management in a DAW.
  6. Exhibit the proper workflow to mix a session in a DAW.
  7. Exhibit the proper workflow for mastering session in a DAW.
