BIO-1210 Sustainability in Healthcare


Credits 4
A survey course in sustainability in the healthcare environment including communication, leadership, environmental sustainability, systems and processes, and organizational knowledge. Of particular relevance to those interested in Environmental Services, Building Services, Waste Management, Hospital Facilities, and/or Dietary Services.
Prerequisite(s): EGL-1010 or EGL-1010S
Course Outcomes
  1. Describe effective organizational leadership strategies, including collaborative leadership and systems thinking.
  2. Describe effective strategies for conflict resolution and problem-solving.
  3. Design effective organizational structures, including decision-making processes and protocols.
  4. Explain basic sustainability concepts related to the national movement to reduce the environmental impact of the healthcare industry.
  5. Identify key regulations related to the national movement to reduce the environmental impact of the healthcare industry.
  6. Evaluate the effectiveness of one’s own healthcare environment in reducing its environmental impact, including reduction of waste, use of non-toxic chemicals, and energy and water conservation.
  7. Demonstrate “information literacy” by analyzing workplace operating procedures in light of current literature.
  8. Demonstrate “quantitative literacy” by interpreting numerical data.
  9. Effectively report information/data in written form.
  10. Effectively report information/data in oral form, including the use of appropriate presentation technologies.
  11. Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills, including cultural sensitivity, active listening, and strategic questioning.
  12. Design strategies to reduce waste and environmental pollutants, conserve water and energy, and improve patient/worker health and safety.
