EGL-2120 Introduction to African Literature

A general introduction to the oral and written literature of Africa, with emphasis on their formal and aesthetic properties and their sociopolitical, cultural, and linguistic significance for contemporary African societies, as well as the literature’s place within the canon of literature of the African Diaspora.
Prerequisite(s): EGL-1020, EGL-1100, EGL-1320, or EGL-1340.
Course Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial African literatures, including the impact of colonialism and post-colonialism on Africans and their literature.
  2. Explain the influence of the oral traditions on the written literature of Africa.
  3. Explain the sociopolitical, cultural, and linguistic significance of African literature for contemporary African societies.
  4. Write analytically with adequate documentation about topics relevant major Black African writers, and analyze their works applying literary terms and concepts.
  5. Analyze the impact of womanism, feminism, and African spirituality on African women writers.
  6. Explain the relationship between African literature and the literatures of the African Diaspora, specifically U.S. Black literature and Caribbean literature.
