ESL-0105 English as a Second Language: Intermediate Reading

Credits 3
Equivalent Hours 4
ESL 0105 is the second reading course in the English as a Second Language reading/writing series. It is an intermediate academic reading course designed to acquaint non-native American English speakers with American culture and American idiomatic expression through reading and vocabulary development. In this course, students practice reading comprehension skills through strategies such as identifying main ideas in academic reading passages; using context and text markers to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words, author’s purpose, and tone of an intermediate text; and coherently summarizing main ideas in a paragraph. Students also practice skimming and scanning text for information. A second focus in this course is vocabulary development. Students study academic words in context and use this target vocabulary in original writing such as short summary passages and other reading responses. A grade of C or higher is required to successfully complete this course.
