ESL-0201 English as a Second Language: Composition Credits 3 Equivalent Hours 4 ESL 0201 is the third writing course in the English as a Second Language reading/writing series. It is for non-native English speakers whose academic writing ability is a higher intermediate level and who have a good command of English. In this course, students write original paragraph-length compositions with complex grammar structures. Students learn to recognize and respond to prompts on academic topics using appropriate rhetorical patterns such as process, logical order, cause/effect, and comparison/contrast. Students are expected to type coherent compositions using standard format and mechanics and also employ a variety of sentence structures and use key transitional vocabulary. Additionally, students use all five stages of the writing process to brainstorm, outline, draft, review, and revise their work.
A grade of C or higher is required to successfully complete this course. Prerequisite(s): Placement by exam or ESL - 0102 Corequisite(s): ESL - 0106 recommended Course Outcomes
- Use the writing process to produce paragraphs of appropriate length that demonstrate unity of ideas on academic topics.
- Respond to prompts using appropriate rhetorical patterns with appropriate signal vocabulary.
- Write simple, compound, complex, and compound/complex sentences.
- Write or type paragraphs using standard format and mechanics.
- Edit paragraphs for grammatical and mechanical errors.
