ESL-0202 English as a Second Language: Advanced Composition

ESL 0202 is the highest level writing course in the English as a Second Language reading/writing series.  Successful completion of ESL 0202 fulfills the College’s reading readiness prerequisite. It is for non-native English speakers whose academic writing ability is a higher level.  In this course, students write original essay-length compositions employing various rhetorical patterns.  Students continue to recognize and respond to prompts on academic topics using appropriate rhetorical patterns such as logical order, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, and argument.  Students are expected to type coherent compositions using standard format and mechanics and also employing a variety of sentence structures and using key transitional vocabulary.  Additionally, students use all five stages the writing process to brainstorm, outline, draft, review, and revise their work.

 

A grade of C or higher is required to successfully complete this course
Prerequisite(s): Placement by exam or ESL - 0201
Corequisite(s): ESL - 0106 recommended
Course Outcomes
 

  1. Use the writing process to produce essays of appropriate length that demonstrate unity of ideas on academic topics.
  2. Respond coherently to prompts using rhetorical patterns with appropriate signal vocabulary.
  3. Use standard academic English grammar to communicate ideas effectively.
  4. Write or type essays using standard format and mechanics.
  5. Edit writing for grammatical and mechanical errors.
