FOS-2590 Crime Scene Investigation

A practical hands-on approach to evidence identification, documentation, collection and handling from various types of crime scenes to the crime laboratory to presentation in court. Includes photography, measuring and sketching, developing, lifting and preserving latent fingerprints, and creating casts of impression evidence. 
Prerequisite(s): FOS-2500 and FOS-2550 .
Course Outcomes
 

  1. Discuss techniques needed to safely locate, document, collect, process, and examine physical evidence from a crime scene.
  2. Apply proper procedures for note-taking, measuring, sketching, photography, and packaging evidence.
  3. Evaluate legal aspects needed to ensure proper handling and chain of custody from the crime scene to the crime lab and the courtroom.
  4. Analyze legal and ethical issues related to crime scenes, and the preparation and procedures for testifying in court as an expert witness.
