HIM-2530 Health Information Management


Credits 4
In this course, students learn the basics of current management theories, such as transformational and servant leadership. Next, students explore how different organizational structures of a healthcare organization can affect employee behavior and morale. From this, they examine the role of the health information supervisor in the organizational chart and identify human resources strategies that could improve their supervisory skills. Furthermore, students practice communication skills that an effective supervisor needs to present information and respond appropriately to delicate situations. Lastly, students discuss the components of a budget in a health information management department.
Prerequisite(s): HIM-2515 with a grade of C or higher.
Capstone Course(s): Students must complete a minimum of 50 credits, including any prerequisite courses, prior to enrolling in this course. A cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher is also required.

  1. Explain current management theories
  2. Compare and contrast the major forms of healthcare organization’s structure
  3. Discuss how the healthcare organization’s  structure affects employee behavior and morale.
  4. Discuss the role of Health Information supervisors in relation to upper management in health information.  
  5. Identify human resources strategies for organizational best practices.
  6. Use communication skills to present information  and  respond to situations in a supervisory role.
  7. Discuss the components of a budget in a health information management department.
