MAT-1060 Elements of Geometry and Measurement

Credits 4
Part of the three-course sequence for students preparing to teach at the elementary or middle school level. Topics include development of spatial reasoning and the investigation of two- and three-dimensional shapes, their properties, measurements, constructions, and transformations. Visual and concrete representations will be explored.
Prerequisite(s): MAT-1050 completion with grade of C or higher.
3 class/2 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Apply forms of mathematical reasoning by justifying arguments and generalizing patterns and relationships.
  2. Identify basic geometric figures in two and three dimensions.
  3. Analyze geometric shapes in two and three dimensions using definitions, characteristics, and properties.
  4. Illustrate geometric relationships through basic geometric constructions with and without technology.
  5. Solve problems through spatial visualization and geometric modeling.
  6. Solve problems involving the concept of measurement and conversion within and between the U.S. customary and metric systems.
  7. Measure attributes in one, two, and three dimensions using multiple techniques, tools, and formulas.
  8. Analyze attributes and relationships in two dimensions using coordinate geometry.
  9. Apply symmetry, congruence, similarity, and other transformations in mathematical situations.
