MAT-1160 Elements of Probability and Statistics

Credits 4
Part of the three-course sequence for students preparing to teach at the elementary or middle school level. Topics include organizing, summarizing, presenting, and interpreting data, sampling, counting techniques, basic probability concepts and distributions, simulation, expectations, and introduction to statistical inference. Concrete methods will be explored.
Prerequisite(s): MAT-1050 completion with grade of C or higher.
Course Outcomes
  1. Critically evaluate the design, including sampling techniques, of a statistical study.
  2. Analyze data through graphical representations.
  3. Calculate standard statistical measures of center, spread, position, and correlation.
  4. Interpret standard statistical measures of data including those used in the education field.
  5. Interpret the results of linear regression and associated statistics.
  6. Apply counting techniques, including the fundamental counting principle, permutations, and combinations.
  7. Calculate probabilities using theoretical, empirical, and simulation approaches.
  8. Solve problems using basic concepts of probability including conditional probability, independence, and expected value.
  9. Model probability using an appropriate distribution (e.g. binomial and normal models.)
  10. Estimate a population parameter with a confidence interval using methods of statistical inference.
