MAS-1050 Law and Ethics for Allied Health


Credits 3
An introduction to the legal and ethical responsibilities of a health care worker. Emphasis is placed on the laws and regulations governing health care, including HIPAA, contractual agreements, malpractice, and federal and state legislation governing health care operations. The focus is on professional ethics and standards of care.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for EGL-1010, MAT-1130.
Course Outcomes
  1. Define the medical assistant’s legal scope of practice.
  2. Define implications of contract and records law as it applies to health care.
  3. Define civil and criminal law as it applies to health care.
  4. Compare and contrast all levels of government legislation/law as they apply to health care.
  5. Apply ethics to professional practice in health care.
  6. Identify the elements of professional liability and malpractice.
